Mumbai can be cold and cruel and warm and nurturing at the same time. While on my 'power' walk down the Versova stretch the other day i noticed a long line of people standing outside the Versova Gurudwara. I was curious to know what was happening and decided i would investigate on my way back. It was Eid and i wondered if there was another celebration or festival happening on the same day. As is the case in Mumbai, with the noise and pollution of the traffic, your thoughts get completely jumbled as you duck out of the way of another super-sized vehicle trying to negotiate its way through a road half its size.

On my way back i mustered the courage to walk up to a few of the volunteers and enquired what was happening. They immediately shoved a thali in my hand and before i could say anything else, 2 hot chapatis were put on my plate along with some rice and steaming hot moong dal! I was also handed a super sized banana. I'm not one to turn away a meal. This was my first Langar. I finished what I could and they helped me pack the rest which i could distribute to beggars or kids down the street who were not present there.

My sikh friend Gurinder Singh once told me - Sheldon, you will NEVER see a sikh beggar on the street. As long as God has given us two hands we will work! I clunked my plate to him. Paaji tussi great ho!
